History of Labone Senior High

In 1949, six illustrious sons of our country saw the need to establish an educational institution to cater for the educational needs of the young people staying around Osu, La and its environs. A private school was therefore established at Ako Adjei Area.

At Independence, the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in line with his lofty ideas on rapid socio economic development embarked on a widespread expansion of educational facilities. In view of that the Ghana Education Trust Fund was instituted and charged with the construction of school buildings throughout the country. LABONE SENIOR HIGH was one of such schools.

The crest was designed by Nii Amon Kotei a senior citizen and national award winner who also designed the Ghana coat of arms. The crest of the school is a shield divided into four quarters with strong fishing rope running horizontally and vertically. Each of the four quarters carries an appropriate motive;

Top right-hand corner -> The early appearance of the SUN in the East: This depicts "Make hay while the sun shines"
Top left-hand quarter -> A crossed pen and torch light on an open book: this depicts "the pen is mightier than the sword"
The bottom left-hand quarter -> A crossed pick axe and cutlass: This depicts "Dignity in labour"
The bottom left hand quarter -> The oil palm tree is a wonder plant which symbolizes usefulness and productivity (Labone Senior High School students should therefore be productive and useful in all aspects of life, wherever they find themselves).

New pupils are admitted in September every year through a computerized system under the control of the Ghana Education Service.

The system works based on the results of an entry examination known as the Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E). This examination is held for junior high schools at various centres throughout the country.

Entry Forms for the above examination are obtained from the West African Examination Council (W.A.E.C) through the headteachers of the respective junior high schools within the country. Once the computerised selection process is completed, the list of admitted students are made available by the Ghana Education Service to the school. The list is then made public through the school’s notice board.

An opportunity is also given to foreign nationals who wish to apply for admission into the school through a written entrance examination organised by the school.

Students from other senior high school or fresh senior high school starter who wishes to continue the education at the school can also contact the school's adminstration through the contact list provided in the contact section of this page.

After a student gains admission, he is given the school's official prospectus. This book helps new students about the school and all that is required of them.
