The school is both day and boarding and a coeducational institution. It was formally Akro Experimental Junior Secondary School which was upgraded to a Senior Secondary Technical in 1991. The school historically epitomises the development and growth of education in Ghana. The interception of the Education Reform Programme in 1987 gave the school its new status.
